Juno Beach’s Loggerhead Marinelife Center Will Celebrate Deaf Awareness Month Sunday, Sept. 20

Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) will celebrate National Deaf Awareness Month with an American Sign Language (ASL) Day on Sunday, Sept. 20, in Juno Beach. According to a press release, the day will offer public and private programs designed to make marine science, conservation and ocean education more accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

The programs will be led by LMC Senior Biologist Jennifer Reilly, who is deaf and fluent in ASL. Families and guests can participate in activities including hatchling discovery, storytime, a guided tour, a signing lesson and educational presentations about sea turtles and coastal habitats.

The event includes both public programs and private experiences that require advance booking. Some programming will also include ASL interpretation or closed captioning.

Reilly said the event is intended to bring Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing communities together through a shared interest in sea turtles and marine conservation.

“ASL Day is especially meaningful to me because it creates an opportunity for the Deaf and hard of hearing community, and the hearing community, to come together,” Reilly said in the release.

ASL Day schedule:

6:40-9 a.m.: ASL Hatchling Discovery — private; advance booking required
10:30-11:15 a.m.: ASL Hatchling Tales Storytime
11:30 a.m.-noon: Coastal Habitat Discovery Show with ASL interpretation
12:15-1 p.m.: ASL-Guided Tour of LMC — private; advance booking required
1:30-1:45 p.m.: ASL Signing Lesson
2-2:45 p.m.: Sea Turtles of the Palm Beaches with closed captioning and closing remarks — private; advance booking required
