Try This Homemade Chili Recipe for National Chili Day!

Enjoy some comforting, homemade chili this week because Feb. 22 is National Chili Day! Here is an amazing homemade chili recipe that is sure to make everyone feel full and satisfied.

Lesley’s Classic Chili

by Lesley Banis, Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 pound of ground meat (beef, turkey or pork)
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced
  • Pinch of sugar
  • Pinch of salt and pepper
  • 1 bay leaf (remove before serving)
  • 1 teaspoon of basil
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder (add more for spicy chili)
  • 1 14-ounce can of kidney beans, drained
  • 1 14-ounce can of chili beans

DIRECTIONS

1. Add one pound of ground meat (beef, turkey or pork) to a Dutch oven and brown until fully cooked.

2. Drain the ground meat and add it back to the Dutch oven.

3. Add in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, onion, sugar, salt and pepper, bay leaf, basil, oregano, cumin, garlic powder, chili powder. Stir together.

4. Add kidney beans and chili beans. Stir together.

5. Set on medium heat, covered for 20 minutes.

6. Serve with your favorite toppings like sour cream, hot sauce, cheese or salsa!
