How to Celebrate National No Housework Day April 7

Mark your calendars, but clear your to-do list — April 7 is National No Housework Day.

Historically housework has been seen as a task primarily done by women. Wives and mothers stereotypically are the homemakers who do the cleaning, cooking and organizing while the husband works hard to provide. In the 1980s, April 7 became a designated day to avoid chores, by Thomas and Ruth Roy, creators of several wacky holidays. While this is not the reality of today, and housework has become a responsibility shared by everybody in most households, it is now a holiday for anyone who might feel bogged down by housework to celebrate.

What you can do today, “leave for tomorrow”. Delay washing laundry, leave the dishes in the sink and kick aside the miscellaneous items that litter your floor. Instead, take the time to relax and perform some self-care either independently or with the whole family. Here are a few ideas for you to celebrate National No Housework Day:

Grab your favorite blanket and snacks and watch your favorite shows

If you’re like me, the number one thing that gets in the way of watching your favorite shows is a lengthy task list. On April 7, you have no other household responsibilities so get cozy and turn on that show you’ve been meaning to watch or enjoy a movie.

Get outside of the house

Since your household task list is cleared for the day, step outside and do something you enjoy. Whether it’s grabbing food with some friends, going on a shopping trip or simply enjoying nature, it will feel refreshing to get out of the house.

Treat your partner

If your significant other is the one who usually completes the chores, take over their tasks for the day and make it special. Serve them breakfast in bed or make an elaborate dinner. Plan a relaxing activity for them to do while you clean the house for them.

Order takeout from your favorite restaurant

No housework means you don’t have to cook or do dishes. Browse the menu of your favorite restaurant and enjoy takeout for the night.

Do a fun activity with the family

Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on family time because of household responsibilities? Well, April 7 is the perfect day to plan a family game night, movie night or excursion. However, this can only happen on one condition: ignore any tiny messes that may occur just for one day!
